Towards a universal vaccine for influenza

The ultimate solution to the dreaded flu virus that makes you sick every year millions of people around the world could be closer. Scientists at the University of Oxford, UK, have successfully tested a flu vaccine might work against all strains of the virus, according to British newspaper 'The Guardian'.
Unlike the treatments used so far, this vaccine works against various parts of the influenza virus, so it would not be necessary to reformulate the vaccine every year. This will avoid having to prepare for each season new variants of therapy depending on the strain prevalent at that time.

SAVE OF TIME AND MONEY

According to the authors of the research, a universal vaccine would save time and money, since the process of development of seasonal vaccines against this virus is at least four months of work, and a multimillion-dollar investment. "The problem with flu is that there are a lot of different strains that constantly changing, "says Adrian Hill, director of the Jenner Institute, University of Oxford. Thus, when a new strain to which humans are not immune, scientists are finding that time can not have an effective vaccine against the virus, as has happened in recent years with influenza A or avian flu.

The team led by Dr Sarah Gilbert, and this treatment has proven successful in eleven healthy volunteers who were vaccinated and infected with the Wisconsin strain of H3N2 influenza virus. The result left no doubt: the vaccine worked in the eleven people who receive it.
